Frequently Asked Questions

LIP BLUSHING

Does lip blushing look natural?

Semi-permanent lip blushing enhances the natural shape of your lips, giving them a boost of vitality and color. It is a popular semi-permanent make up treatment that gives a flush of color and defines the lip contours.

How is the pigment applied?

A machine is used to implant an organic pigment into the outer layers of the skin that can last up to 36 months, depending on skin type.

How long should I allow for my lip blushing appointment?

You will need to allow three hours. Kindly note that if you are late to your appointment this time may be deducted from your pre-numbing time.

What can I expect during my lip blushing appointment?

1. We will have a chat and I will ask you to fill out a consent form.
2. Numbing cream will be applied to numb the treatment area while I complete the lip design process.
3. Your lip contour shape will be drawn on using a special pencil.
4. We will consult about the drawn lip shape and your procedure won’t start until you are 100% happy with the drawn shape.
5. Numbing cream is re-applied throughout the procedure.

How noticeable will it be that I’ve had a procedure?

There will be some redness and swelling. I don’t recommend having a cosmetic tattoo procedure within a week before a special occasion where you may feel a little self conscious. As the lips heal, the pigment will deepen in color before fading away. This can take 3-10 days.

What will I need to do at home during the healing process?

I recommend a ‘dry heal’. This means the area treated shouldn’t be exposed to water, oils, rich moisturizers, active ingredients or heavy makeup for the first seven days.

  • Use a clean face washer or makeup wipes during this period, in combination with a very mild moisturizing lotion rather than a heavy cream.

  • Don’t scrub or wash your lips for seven days.

  • During the first seven days, you can maintain your skincare and makeup routine but you will need to avoid the products coming into contact with your lips and surrounding areas.

  • Avoid sweating and sun exposure as this will affect your healing and pigment retention.

  • If your lips are excessively dry, you can use a very small amount of ‘Grazia’ (a product I can provide to you), on your lips from day three.

The color will appear very rich for 48 hours immediately after the treatment then begin to fade away in the days to follow.

How long is the total healing time?

It can take up to six weeks to fully heal. It’s crucial that you follow my instructions for the first 10 days. It’s very important you strictly follow any home-care instructions I give you to maximize results, healing and prevent infection.

What should I expect after my procedure?

After five to seven days the lips will start to exfoliate dead skin cells and the colour depth will fade. The top layer will flake away leaving a softer and lighter colour below. You may feel the pigment has lightened significantly but it will resurface as your skin heals.

At your follow-up application I will assess how your lips have retained the pigment and strokes. This is why a second procedure is necessary. If the colour is too light once healed, I will make adjustments during the touch up appointment. It’s easier to add and darken pigment than to remove it.

What about follow-up and refresh procedures?

All initial cosmetic tattoo procedures include a retouch 4-6 weeks after the first application. At your follow-up appointment I will assess how your lips have retained the pigment. Therefore, a second procedure is necessary. If the color is too light once healed, I will adjust during the touch up appointment. It is easier to add and darken pigment than to remove it.

The treated area must heal completely before I can perform your second procedure. Four to six weeks in-between is ideal. In some situations, the skin does not hold the pigment and you may require a third application. There will be an additional fee for this. This is rare but we are dealing with skin and results can be unpredictable.

Lip blushing is semi-permanent and can last up to 36 months.  To maintain your pigment and lip line definition, I recommend a refresh procedure every 12 to 18 months, depending on your skin type, medications, and sun exposure.

I’m prone to cold sores, can I still have lip blushing?

Yes, you can but be aware that the stimulation from the needle I use can bring on a cold sore. This can mean the healing time will be longer. If you’re prone to cold sores, it’s a good idea to take any preventative measures before your procedure.

I have anti-wrinkle injections and / or lip fillers, does that affect lip blushing procedures?

If you have anti-wrinkle injections (such as Botox), or lip fillers, do not undergo any cosmetic tattoo procedures with 30 days of injections. I also suggest waiting a week to 10 days to allow any swelling associated with the permanent makeup application to subside before having any injectables post a cosmetic tattoo procedures. Swelling from this procedure can obscure the shape of your lips and may not give optimal augmentation.
